Open Standards Development

Our innovative standards are custom-designed by industry experts to meet the specific market needs of businesses and consumers. These market leading standards give product manufacturers a straightforward way to help their customers gain greater control of, and even improve, everyday activities.

Open, Global Participation

There are no preconditions to membership in the Alliance. Membership is open to all entities wishing to participate. In fact, members come from all parts of the world and represent all parts of the industry including technology providers such as silicon manufacturers, module providers and software developers, providers of end products and services such as device manufacturers and cloud solutions to end users including utilities and major deployers of Zigbee technology.

Zigbee standards are developed through a democratic, participation-based approach. There are clear voting rights and rules on member participation for development and approval of standards and these processes are clearly listed in Alliance documentation.

Requirements Driven

Zigbee standards development is requirements driven. No standards are developed unless Alliance members identify specific market needs so the standards can be used to create market-relevant products and enable the commercial success of the products and services of our members.

ZigBee Standards Development Process

Standard Validation and Interoperability

No Zigbee standard is ratified until at least three implementations of the standard are tested together. This validates that the standard is complete and multiple implementers are interpreting the standard in the same way. This provides a quality control check on the standard text itself and demonstrates that the standard is ready to implement in products and services. This stage of the process creates the first Zigbee Certified products for the standard and provides Golden Units which can be used to test interoperability in the future.

The Zigbee Alliance is the foundation and future of the IoT. Established in 2002, our wide-ranging global membership collaborates to create and evolve universal open standards for the products transforming the way we live, work, and play. With our members’ deep and diverse expertise, robust certification programs, and a full suite of open IoT solutions, we are leading the movement toward a more intuitive, imaginative, and useful world.
