ZIGBEE Today

Bob Heile ZigBee is paving the way for California's utilities to meet a state mandate to begin creating home area networks (HAN) in early 2012 that allow customers to access their home energy data. Two investor-owned utilities in California, San Diego Gas and Electric and Pacific Gas and Electric, have created HAN implementation plans using ZigBee Smart Energy. These plans call for the use of ZigBee Certified products and represent another step forward on ZigBee Smart Energy deployment.

ZigBee Reaches New Milestones in 2011

While every year is full of activity, 2011 proved to be one where the ZigBee Alliance did even more. This year, the Alliance developed new relationships with complementary organizations, added new standards, updated existing standards, steadily increased its list of ZigBee Certified products, and opened new offices in China.

For years, the Alliance has strived to be an open and collaborative organization and has been working with other standards groups since our inception nine years ago. This year, the Alliance expanded its already long list of collaborations with these organizations:

ZigBee Today

Bob Heile ZigBee is paving the way for California's utilities to meet a state mandate to begin creating home area networks (HAN) in early 2012 that allow customers to access their home energy data. Two investor-owned utilities in California, San Diego Gas and Electric and Pacific Gas and Electric, have created HAN implementation plans using ZigBee Smart Energy. These plans call for the use of ZigBee Certified products and represent another step forward on ZigBee Smart Energy deployment.

SDG&E has rolled out 98 percent of its smart meters, including 1.4 million electric meters and 850,000 communication modules. It is using Tendril's ZigBee Certified products in its initial rollout. PG&E will use ZigBee Certified products from Control4 and Silver Spring Networks for its 500-customer initial rollout. By the end of 2012, California should have up to 15,000 newly connected devices, including up to 5,000 each from SDG&E, PG&E and Southern California Edison, which begins its first phase this month.

The California Public Utilities Commission mandate also requires utilities' initial HAN plans to open their HAN systems to multiple device manufacturers to give consumers more choices. Thanks to our members, there are nearly 200 ZigBee Certified products for ZigBee Smart Energy, so both consumers and utilities will have a wide array of product choices. By standardizing these rollouts on ZigBee Smart Energy, these utilities and their customers can be assured of having interoperable products that will simplify the activation of HANs.

These California rollouts follow successful ZigBee Smart Energy implementations across Texas, which now has 4.3 million smart meters. More than 25,000 registered customers in the greater Houston and Dallas areas are beginning to get access to more of the capabilities offered by their energy service providers. The first phase of the Texas rollout includes more than 5,700 HAN devices that are ZigBee Certified products.

Industry analysts recognize the value utilities have found in ZigBee, illustrated by their HAN strategies and deployments. "ZigBee seems like a natural technology to funnel smart meter data back to the utility," says Norm Bogen, VP Digital Entertainment, for In-Stat. "After all, ZigBee is already in the vast majority of smart meters that communicate with devices inside the home. The technology seems destined to mesh with other smart meters to carry the data back to the utility."

ZigBee members, recognizing growing HAN demand, have nearly doubled the number of ZigBee Certified products this year, with significant increases in products using ZigBee Smart Energy and ZigBee Home Automation standards.

You'll have a chance to see some of these products at the International CES show next month, Jan. 10-13, 2012, in Las Vegas. There will be a number of ZigBee Alliance members at the show as well as at the ZigBee Tech Zone in South Hall 1, Booth 21318.

Best wishes for a prosperous 2012,

Bob Heile
Chairman,
ZigBee Alliance

ZigBee Compliant platforms and modules and ZigBee Certified products from ZigBee Smart Energy and ZigBee Home Automation underscore ZigBee's easy-to-use technology and the market momentum propelling ZigBee. The center of the pavilion will feature a home appliance demonstration with GE refrigerator and washer and dryer, as well as a variety of in-home displays showing ZigBee Smart Energy in action.

ZigBee members have the opportunity to participate in bustling show opportunities like CES. Plans will begin for CES 2013 shortly after the close of CES 2012 so organizations interested in participating should contact Krista Davi immediately following to sign up for 2013.

  • Society of Automotive Engineers to meet utility and automaker needs to connect to the Smart Grid
  • Consortium for SEP 2 Interoperability, a certification program for Smart Energy 2 stakeholders, including the HomeGrid Forum, HomePlug Powerline Alliance and the Wi-Fi Alliance
  • Energy@home for a European residential energy platform

This year, the Alliance introduced plans for a new standard, ZigBee 3D Sync, designed to bring active 3D to consumer electronic devices. The Alliance also completed the ZigBee Gateway and ZigBee Building Automation standards and issued an enhancement for ZigBee Smart Energy. This enhancement provided a variety of new features to the only standard for Advanced Metering Infrastructure and Home Area Networks. Finally, we worked closely with the public and stakeholder community to continue development of the Smart Energy Profile version 2.0.

Our members were very industrious, using ZigBee in a variety of standards to create hundreds of newly ZigBee Certified products. We'll close the year with nearly 400 ZigBee Certified products based on ZigBee Smart Energy, ZigBee Home Automation, ZigBee Telecom Services, ZigBee Remote Control and ZigBee Gateway.

The Alliance also showed growth in the organization, opening two offices in China to drive greater ZigBee adoption and address standards to meet China's specific needs for its rapidly expanding infrastructure.

While 2011 was a productive year, the Alliance is on pace to keep growing in 2012. The Alliance is focused on increasing the adoption of its family of standards, creating new standards, adding members, growing the numbers of ZigBee Certified products and expanding its footprint in the emerging Internet of Things.

ZigBee Alliance invited to host an Internet of Things Solution Forum at Computex 2012

Computex (Taipei, June 5-9, 2012) has invited the ZigBee Alliance to organize and run an exclusive Internet of Things (IoT) Solution Forum at 2012 Computex. The Forum will be part of the IoT solution exhibition and will focus on introducing the ZigBee Alliance and its standards supporting IoT, particularly those targeting the Smart Grid, HealthCare and Smart City applications.

Computex, run by the Taipei Computer Association, is a major IT solution trade show with a 31-year history. It has grown to be the largest IT exhibition in Asia and second largest in the world. In 2012, the show will feature 5,000 booths and a minimum of 120,000 visitors and nearly 40,000 international buyers from about 160 countries are expected. The Computex invitation is a significant recognition of the importance of ZigBee in enabling the emerging IoT market.
