ZigBee Today

Bob HeileZigBee is entering a new phase of adoption worldwide, with a growing ZigBee Certified ecosystem of consumer and business control products. Throughout this process, ZigBee Alliance members are actively shaping the evolution of global wireless monitoring and control markets.

ABI Research noted in September that ZigBee's RF4CE initiative and leadership in adoption of ZigBee Smart Energy and ZigBee Home Automation has helped drive a significant rebound in Wireless Sensor Network market growth. ABI's "Wireless Sensor Networking Markets" study reports that the uplift will drive chipset shipments from about 10 million chipsets in 2009 to 645 million in 2015. Strong Alliance membership growth and Certified Product introductions will continue to positively impact future chipset shipments for the WSN market.

  • Spearhead standards initiatives to successfully achieve the adoption of ZigBee specifications in the EU by the leading standards development organizations,
  • Cooperate with Alliance members and EU resources to gain maximum support for EU standards strategy
  • Analyze European-specific market requirements and develop and present standards strategy recommendations
Develop strategic partnerships and manage EU-based organizations, companies, and agencies in support of standardization efforts.

New ZigBee White Paper

The primary purpose of Understanding ZigBee Gateway is to provide a basic understanding of the capabilities, mechanisms and recommended practices of the ZigBee Gateway.

ZigBee Certified Product highlight

The ConnectPort X2 for Smart Energy provides a low-cost connection between a Home Area Network (HAN) and an energy service provider's software application over an IP connection. The gateway incorporates the ZigBee Smart Energy wireless standard (or "Public Application Profile"), making it interoperable with non-Digi devices. The ZigBee Smart Energy standard also allows the ConnectPort X2 to define what information the device will send over the network and how to behave with other devices on the network.

As part of the Alliance's certification process, all products using any of ZigBee’s public application profiles are certified to perform regardless of manufacturer. This allows customers to purchase them with confidence and install them with ease. The complete list of interoperable products is available at ZigBeeCertifiedProducts.

ZigBee Today

ZigBee is entering a new phase of adoption worldwide, with a growing ZigBee Certified ecosystem of consumer and business control products.

ZigBee is well set on that market-influencing course. ON World reports that more than 350 global manufacturers, with annual revenues of more than $1 trillion, have adopted ZigBee. ZigBee's global adoption rates have resulted in a major milestone achievement for ZigBee in September: 100 announced ZigBee Certified products. ZigBee Certified products and the Alliance's 400 members foster an ecosystem for control products in energy, commercial and consumer electronics applications.

ZigBee Smart Energy products dominate the ZigBee Certified product lineup with 64 ZigBee Certified Smart Energy products, followed by 24 ZigBee Certified Home Automation products and 13 ZigBee Certified Telecom Services products in that standard's first year. More manufacturers are expected to seek certification, bolstering the ZigBee ecosystem in these three ZigBee markets, as well as for ZigBee Remote Control and ZigBee Health Care backed by the Continua Health Alliance. We can expect ZigBee Retail Services, scheduled for completion in 2011, to promote significant additional activity.

The desire to better serve the needs of the Alliance’s almost 100 European Mmembers and to further the adoption of ZigBee Smart Energy adoption and demandwithin the EU community prompted the Alliance to launch open a European headquarters Ooffice in Cambridge, England, this past September. this year to focus on Smart Grid standardization efforts and European Union requirements. Approximately 40 percent of Alliance members have European operations focused on ZigBee-related projects, including the EU’s 2009 mandate that 80 percent of EU electricity customers be served with smart meters by 2020. The Alliance’s European headquarters in Cambridge, England, Ooffice will help members better coordinate their activities regarding EU- specific content in ZigBee standards and facilitate the Alliance’s participation in Smart Energy- related EU standards activities aimed at meeting the EU 2009 mandate that 80 percent of EU electricity customers be served with smart meters by 2020.

Developing new and existing partnerships is also a component of the Alliance’s focused service to members with EU projects. The Alliance currently collaborates with the European Smart Metering Industry Group (ESMIG), the Device Language Message Specification (DLMS) User Association, the Electric Retail Association (ERA), and CEN. New partnerships are in development with the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization(CENELEC), European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication (ITU-T), and we have been invited to participate in European Commission-related activities on the Internet of Things

Thanks to the contributions of its many member companies, the Alliance has made strong market and technology gains this year, creating an unparalleled opportunity for all Alliance members to help define wireless monitoring and control markets and provide consumers with smarter and greener products with easy-to-use control capabilities.
