Energy Aware Technology: Expanding Their Vision of Energy Solutions

PowerTab
Energy Aware’s PowerTabTM provides utility companies and their customers current energy use and price information.

Utilities worldwide have begun to optimize their product portfolios by selecting and utilizing products based on open standards.  Products and services utilizing open standards reduce obsolescence risk while providing flexible, durable solutions.  Since multiple companies participate in establishing open standards and ultimately create a variety of products, utilities are able to expand their vendor lists and product options thereby reducing overall risks related to dependency on one vendor. These same open standards, including ZigBee®,  allow utilities and their customers to obtain higher quality, longer lasting products with lower pricing –  all key differentiators in an industry now focused on eco-friendly, cost-conscious solutions.

Energy Aware Technology initially opened its doors for business by selling a proprietary energy savings in-home display to housing developers.  Though very successful, they began to realize there is a larger market addressing utilities and end users.  With utilities shifting their interest and dollars to standardized products, Energy Aware began to research standards and determined ZigBee Smart Energy standard was the standard offering the path for success.

Designed for ZigBee, PowerTab™ became Energy Aware’s first product to incorporate ZigBee Smart Energy.  This in-home power display offers utilities and utility customers an informed way to manage energy consumption through secure, easy-to-use ZigBee wireless communications.  Using wireless technology, rather than wired technologies, not only slashes installation costs; but also allows the use of battery-powered devices not directly connected to home power lines, such as thermostats and energy displays. The analyst group ON World estimates that utilities will spend $1.6 billion on wireless sensor network technologies—predominantly ZigBee—for smart metering and demand response by 2011.

As a member of the ZigBee Alliance and by building a product on ZigBee Smart Energy, Energy Aware has expanded its business model from being proprietary technology centric, to model embracing standards.  Prior to ZigBee, they were offering a stand-alone energy monitoring system sold exclusively to housing developers.  Today, Energy Aware is offering utilities and their customers around the world a reliable, secure, easy-to-use wireless communications for managing energy.

“Becoming a member of the ZigBee Alliance has been a huge boost for our company profile and sales”, said Janice Cheam, president of Energy Aware.  “By integrating our products with the ZigBee Smart Energy Profile we became a part of a standard that is being used worldwide.  From hassle-free integration to expanding our business partnerships, the Alliance has allowed us to widen our business development efforts”.

ON World estimates utilities will spend $1.6 billion on wireless sensor network technologies—predominantly ZigBee—for smart metering and demand response by 2011.

Business Goals

Energy Aware’s market expanded greatly through membership in the ZigBee Alliance. Its product focus shifted from a proprietary stand-alone system to one that utilizes the only global wireless standard utilized among utilities, product manufacturers and technology suppliers. Using ZigBee Smart Energy Profile, the PowerTab provides utility customers with current energy use, energy price information and along with messages from a utility.  The use of ZigBee Smart Energy allows for easy communication with other smart grid technologies and ensures smooth operations for the utilities.Additionally, Energy Aware’s PowerTab caught the attention of Comverge Inc., another ZigBee Alliance member, who has now licensed the technology and added this product to its comprehensive AMI offering with exclusive distribution rights in North America.

Technology Solution

Energy Aware’s PowerTab with ZigBee Smart Energy offer utilities a global open standard way to implement AMI/HAN communications. It benefits consumers by allowing them to manage their energy consumption wisely using automation and near real-time information.  Utilizing the ZigBee Smart Energy profile, Energy Aware was able to create and get its product to market faster while increasing market potential.

Benefits

By incorporating the ZigBee Smart Energy standard, Energy Aware was able to:
Reduce product costs with a higher return on investment

Speed time-to-market

Increase market adoption

Lower barriers to market entry

Decrease customer risk

Increase their Web traffic significantly

Telegesis and ZigBee
Get Into Hot Water

Telegesis end node, TBN KM-K-3Z logger

Monitoring and accurate accounting of utility consumption – whether electricity, gas, or water - is a strategically important task, affecting the economy of every country. Historically in Russia, the provisioning of all water services had been provided, free of charge. However, recently the government decided to introduce a levy-based system that would monitor and charge for usage of water. TBN Energoservice, a Russian company specializing in metering and analysis of energy resource consumption, was chosen to comply with the Moscow government program known as “Water meter into every municipal house.”

TBN Energoservice decided to supply an automatic meter reading (AMR) solution based on ZigBee® because of its simplicity, low cost and ease of installation. They called upon ZigBee Alliance member, Telegesis, who provided a wireless, water consumption AMR system based on ZigBee technology. The system uses ZigBee mesh networking technology delivered through a module from Telegesis and incorporating software and silicon from another ZigBee Alliance member, Ember Corporation.

Each apartment is equipped with a battery powered end node, TBN KM-K-3Z logger, installed at the same time as the water meter. Each of these end nodes include a microcontroller and the Telegesis ETRX2 ZigBee module. ZigBee routers are then installed on each apartment floor where main power is available. Each router also contains a Telegesis ETRX2-PA module which has additional power amplification enabling data to be transmitted from up to five floors away. A separate building controller also using an ETRX2-PA module is placed either in a basement or roof space. This central building controller aggregates and sends data to a central office via Ethernet.

The ZigBee technology in this system provides commissioning simplicity. Engineers simply mark the locations of every node on a building plan and fit node identifiers. After installation, end nodes and routers form a mesh network with the end nodes choosing routers randomly. End node displays permanently store records of total water consumed so there is no risk of information loss even if communication is lost. If an end node loses contact with a router, it will continue monitoring water consumption while the information system informs the appointed associate of the communication loss, specifying the affected end node. Once communication is re-established, the end node transmits all the data collected during the outage. The end nodes also detect and alert the utility of any sudden significant increase in water consumption often caused by toilet, faucet or water heater leaks.

Historically, the practice of installing individual water meters on multi-family apartment units and then billing for actual consumption has resulted in water savings of 15% or 8,000 gallons per unit per year. Additional financial savings can also be realized by taking the cost of traditional meter reading and subtracting the cost of an advanced AMR system. The total estimated savings is typically $1.00-$1.50 per meter per month providing an annual savings for a 500,000 meter utility of up to $7.5 million per year--with an added bonus of better customer service. Added to that savings and customer service is the simplicity, reliability and accuracy the ZigBee-based AMR system offers long-term.

“This AMR solution with ZigBee is a powerful example of the benefits that utilities and their customers can receive using this technology. We are delighted that TBN Energoservice chose Telegesis modules for their innovative metering application,” commented Telegesis managing director, Nicholas Gomersall.

Telegesis ETRX@ ZigBee Module (inset) utilized in
apartment AMR solution

Telegesis ETRX2 ZigBee Modules are helping save water and money and easily adapt to changing needs.

Business Goals

Telegesis ETRX2 ZigBee Modules with wireless technology, allow for quick, easy implementation. Because there is no need to drill through walls and lay thousands of meters of wire, installation costs are reduced, potential health and safety hazards associated with opening up walls and ceilings are eliminated and there is no disruption to the apartment’s tenants and daily utility operations. These modules monitor water usage in real time and are an important tool to help utilities and their customers better understand water consumption patterns and identify leaks, helping to improve their water conservation practices.

Technology Solution

The Telegesis module configuration is performed by programming internal non-volatile registers. All modems in a network are the same and can be assigned as a coordinator, router or end device. An important advantage of Telegesis ETRX2 ZigBee modules is a deep sleep mode giving current consumption of less than 1μA while the RTC continues to work allowing thereby allowing end nodes to extend their battery life to several years. A unique 64-bit identifier pre-programmed into each module is used for node addressing and the availability of embedded firmware tested by the manufacturer reduces system development time and eliminates the need for expensive, complex development tools.

Benefits

Extended battery life of modules/ low-power sleep mode

Enhanced ability to detect leaks

Resilient networks

Accurate billing

Fast, easy installation

Less disruption to occupants, operations and building structure
Eliminate costs and constraints associated with re-wiring and maintenance
