- What types of certification are available through this program?
There are three types of certifications offered by the ZigBee Certified program:
- ZigBee Compliant Platform: A ZigBee Compliant Platform is comprised of a radio, microprocessor and software running a ZigBee protocol. Certification is based on conformance to a ZigBee specification at the network level.
- ZigBee Certified Product: A ZigBee Certified product is an end product (such as a light fixture or thermostat) built on a ZigBee Compliant Platform. Certification is based on the product’s conformance to ZigBee standard(s) at the application level.
- Manufacturer Specific Profile: If a manufacturer builds a product using a ZigBee Compliant Platform and creates their own application level functionality (manufacturer specific profile), they may certify also certify their product. Note that these products may not wear the ZigBee Certified logo but may say they are ZigBee Certified (Manufacturer Specific Profile). Members may view the ZigBee Designations and Logo Policy for complete details.

We are planning a ZigBee product. Should we start with a ZigBee Compliant Platform? What are the advantages of doing this?
The basis for a ZigBee Certified product is a ZigBee Compliant Platform. A manufacturer whose final goal is certification must use a ZigBee Complaint Platform. Even if certification is not the goal, a ZigBee Compliant Platform provides manufacturers assurance that all necessary functionality for ZigBee communication has been independently verified.

Can we make ZigBee products without getting them certified?

Our product uses a ZigBee Compliant Platform follows all of the ZigBee specifications. May we promote this product as being a “ZigBee product” or “ZigBee compliant”?
ZigBee Alliance members may only advertise that they are a member of the Alliance and a manufacturer of ZigBee products. They cannot use any Alliance logos/marks/trademarks (including the word ZigBee) with products that have not been ZigBee Certified to somehow imply certification or compliance.

If we change our product, does it need to be tested again? What can we change without having it re-tested?
Generally, modified products have to be re-tested if any change affects how the product communicates using ZigBee standards. The Alliance does offer a certification by similarity program allowing for certification without retesting if the product is similar to a previously ZigBee Certified product. The only changes permitted under the program not requiring recertification include color, enclosure, language and similar changes that do not affect how the product implements ZigBee standards. Members can see complete information on this process by viewing our Certification by Similarity and Guidelines for Retesting document.
