- Why use ZigBee RF4CE?
ZigBee RF4CE was specifically designed for applications requiring simple device-to-device control communication that do not need the full-featured mesh networking capabilities offered by ZigBee. ZigBee RF4CE offers lower memory size requirements and as such enable lower cost implementations. The simple device-to-device topology provides easy development and testing, resulting in faster time to market.

- Why do we need RF remotes?
RF remotes provide new levels of interactivity and convenience for today's digital home when compared to IR remotes. RF remotes overcome the problems seen with IR remotes today that are interfered with by large screen TVs as well as removing the line-of-sight and field-of-vision limitations. As more devices add Internet connectivity and other features, the need for two-way communication grows. RF remotes are faster, more reliable and provide more freedom to operate devices from greater distances.

- Does the market need a standard for RF remote controls?
There are currently many proprietary low-cost 2.4GHz solutions. Offering a standards-based solution, meeting the aggressive cost targets for a myriad of RF consumer applications, will accelerate the transition of IR to RF and from proprietary RF to standardized RF, and has been an ongoing Alliance objective. Standardizing RF control allows for multiple vendors products to remain interoperable which consumers expect and demand. ZigBee RF4CE meets these targets and provides a path toward communication with other ZigBee solutions.

- How does ZigBee RF4CE prevent interference from other radio-based technologies, like Wi-Fi?
ZigBee RF4CE incorporates superb interference protection through its method of frequency agility that rapidly moves the ZigBee RF4CE network to an interference free channel when interference from WiFi or another source is detected. This interference mitigation technology allows ZigBee RF4CE to select one of three channels in the 2.4GHz band, including Channel 25 (which is located above the highest possible Wi-Fi channel.) - But are there interference problems with Bluetooth signals?
That's not likely because Bluetooth is a frequency hopping technology which occasionally might collide with ZigBee RF4CE packets. ZigBee RF4CE sends very few bits infrequently between ZigBee RF4CE devices. In the very unlikely case of a collision with Bluetooth, the ZigBee RF4CE information packet will be resent quickly without the user noticing a delay. - Will the ZigBee RF4CE specification send video signals?
ZigBee RF4CE was not designed to support video signals. In fact, the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which all ZigBee specifications are based upon, limits the over-the-air data rate to a very small 250Kilobytes per second and is not large enough to send video signals. ZigBee was designed to support simple control and monitoring applications.

- Is ZigBee Certified testing be offered?
All ZigBee RF4CE platforms are tested before being made available to product developers. There are now many ZigBee RF4CE Compliant Platforms for equipment manufactures to select from when designing a ZigBee product. A ZigBee Certified product test program for ZigBee Remote Control is now available. This program allows product manufactures to create products compliant with the ZigBee Remote Control standard and demonstrate that their products are interoperable with products made by other manufacturers using the same standard.
